    March 10, 2012 March is National Women’s History Month! Susan talks about the latest in the world of small business, and offers some tips and insights for women small business owners. Plus, if your employee has a head cold, what would you rather—have them do, suck it up and put in a day's work? Or stay home and take a sick day? Would you pay them for this time off? Paid sick time is once again the topic of debate brewing among small business owners across the country. Connecticut became the first state to require paid sick leave this past January, however, businesses with less than 50 employees are exempt from the law. Additionally, Seattle will require firms with between five and 49 employees accrue at least five paid sick days each year, beginning in September.

    March 3, 2012 The Obama Administration's proposal to lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 28 percent and eliminate deductions for certain industries is not receiving rave reviews. The International Franchise Association, IFA, says this may negatively impact the more than 80 percent of franchise business owners who are pass-through entities such as S-corporations or LLCs and file their business income on their personal income tax return.     March 3, 2012 The President's budget includes a proposal to expand and simplify the current small business health care tax credit provided for in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).  During debate over PPACA, the Administration claimed 4 million small businesses would be helped by the tax credit. The reality is that only 360,000 are expected to have accessed the credit this past year.  SBE Council repeatedly communicated to the White and Congress that the tax credit was far too complex, undersized and restrictive to be helpful to small businesses. 2011
