One of the easiest ways to gain Twitter followers on autopilot is to establish a free Paper.li publication that centers around your interest area.
When you first create your newspaper – which publishes each day – you have options on where it should draw the articles that it features. If you select Twitter and some relevant hashtags, it will draw from articles that appear on various Twitter feeds.
Here’s the basic way you gain Twitter followers: When it publishes each day, it posts a Tweet to your Twitter account that credits a few Twitter users who have contributed “content” to your Paper.li online newspaper. Here’s an example of what that looks like:

This is great, but if you want to take it several steps further, reviewing your Paper.li publication each day to find great content, and then posting re-Tweets that reference the original Tweeter as well as original article writers, will supercharge your follower acquisition.
